Every once in a while I rediscover forgotten parts my music-collection. Reminds me of the libraries in z-space in Terry Pratchett’s books.

And this month I stumbled upon Dead Can Dance. A great band with wonderful music.

The song “Ariadne” is one amongst many beautiful ones. And if you know the song: not much sense in putting the lyrics in here. =)

If you like slightly melancholic music with ancient and international-traditional influences, go for it. The album “Into the Labyrinth” might be a good start, the live-album “Toward the Within” too.

Ich war grad dabei, ein paar Uhrzeiten für eine Anschluß-Verbindung aufzuschreiben. Ja, handschriftlich, ich weiß, unglaublich.

Und mir passiert es immer wieder, dass die deutsche Art Zahlen auszusprechen und das Nebeneinander von der 24-Stunden-Zählweise in der Schrift  und der 12-Stunden-Zählweise in der Umgangssprache mich verwirrren.

Ich wollte schreiben: 14 Uhr 06.

In meinem Kopf passierte dann folgendes: Ich denke, was ich schreibe. In dem Fall Vier-Zehn Uhr. Mein Gehirn registriert also blitzschnell vier Uhr nachmittags, wandelt das um in ein sechzehn Uhr und leitet diese Information sofort an meine Hand weiter. Die dann folgerichtig die Ziffern eins und sechs schreibt. Ja. Doof.

Ich weiss von vielen nicht Muttersprachlern, dass der Unterschied zwischen Nummernschreib- und sprechweise beim Diktat zu Verwirrungen führt. Einundvierzig. Wer würde da nicht 14 oder 140 schreiben? Ja, genau.

Ob das Kapitel “Die Uhr” in Deutsch-Lehrbüchern im Ausland länger ist? Oder verhasst?

I stumbled upon this game. And it’s somehow addictive. I wonder whether that is because of my experience with development work in India or just so.

The game is rather difficult, but has some good points beyond the gaming experience. One of the things I learned in India was: Education is THE most important thing. Getting people to read and educate themselves, give them the possibility to reach out. The frustrating and yet very true part of the game: If you do not have the money to protect your house against e.g. a flood, you’re basically fucked. If someone gets sick and your family cannot earn enough money, you’re once again fucked.

In on comment on the game a user spoke about the Vimes theory which sums up the injustice of wealth pretty much.

In a nutshell it goes like this: if you have enough money to buy decent boots, you spent 100 dollars for boots which last 5 years. If you cannot spare 100 dollars, you end up buying new crappy boots for 40 dollars every year. And after 5 years, you’ve spent twice as much as the rich guy, but you ended up with crappy boots.

The same goes for education.

I really hate this injustice. Maybe I join the development aid again sometime.

Who would have thought I will like this.

I know, I know, it’s already August.

So, here is a song just made for the hot season. “Meerchen” by the Ohrbooten from Berlin. They are one of my favourite music groups, and they’ve just (well in June) released their second album. It’s not as good as the first one, but has some musical pearls. They’ve varied their style more, “Meerchen” being definitely not the typical Ohrbooten-sound.

Today’s sinfest-comic shows the difference between cats and dogs. Although someone told me, dogs are more intelligent, they surely seem more stupid to me.

Eine Kollegin ist seit einiger Zeit bei Internet-Videos als Autotesterin aktiv.

Da heisst es, ihr Urteil sei nicht käuflich.

Deshalb war ich sehr gespannt, ob beim Test des Hummer H2 kritische Worte zu dem enormen Kraftstoffverbrauch fallen.

“Zudem ist es umweltfreundich, besser wie Euro 4, denn es ist schadstoffarm.”

Tja, und ansonsten taucht das Wort Umwelt leider nicht auf. Dabei sind über 20 Liter auf 100km (man korrigiere mich bitte, wenn ich da falsch liege) nicht grade meine Vorstellung vom umweltfreundlichen Verkehr…
