2005 week 8

Every day of the last week was nearly like the other. I got up between 0700 and 0800 and eata delicious portion of oatmeal gruel while reading my webcomic. After that I allowed myself half an hour of WoW. Then I drove to my workingplace where I did a bunch of more or less sensible things which where paused with lunch and one or two teas with my soon to be colleagues. I left campus between 1800 and 1900, had some dinner and played Wow until midnight. What you can read in the following paragraphs are the exceptions to this scheme.

[Monday]
At this point midBro had my computer for a whole week because his notebooks display was broken. I offered him my machine as a replacement while his is being repaired but he managed to sent in the his machine a week after he got my computer. When I noticed this I was annoyed and told him that I will get my computer back after 2 more weeks no matter if his laptop is repaired by then or not. Sunday he called me to complain about the modem which always gave a hardware error whenever he tried to connect to the internet.

So this morning I came to the rescue. I was lucky because I could find the source of the error very fast when I noticed that he turned the modem on, when the computer was already running. I explained to him, that this is not the way to do it. He tried and it worked. Very well…

Swimming with Lili was very good that day. We managed to swim for 35 minutes straight in a quite reasonable speed. While it is a fact that still much is to be done I also noticed that my endurance is better than I hoped. When dry again we tried the vegetarian fast food restaurant midBros significant other recommended to me which was quite yummy.

Lili had a new haircut which I find rather disturbing and non-fitting. But after all that’s always the case if someone looses about two feet of hair. I have to see if it will look better to me when I got used to it.

Griesgrimm got to know a dwarf named Addrasil which helped him to complete the quest for some troll heads and showed him the way to Loch Modan.

[Tuesday]
First I just wanted the prof to sign my “Antrag auf Eröffnung des Diplomverfahrens” but as I realized, that he had time and was in a talkative mood I snapped at the chance and asked him what he thought of the questions I prepared for my interview which I want to do with people who work for german internet mass media. It was very interesting and while talking he gave me some interesting insights and the address of a valuable contact. I even asked him the thing which bothered me most and now feel much more comfortable when talking to him. Yay!

[Wednesday]
We read “I’m only the driver” with the audio play group again. I always wonder how multitasking some people can be. On of our group managed to code java while reading the script. We still need a occasion where we can perform the piece. So if you no a good place and/or time where an audio play is needed: Let us know!

I went to the mage where I had my measures taken for the role I’m playing at the “prize of power 2″. I will be a - ha - I’m not telling because you might be one of the people who must not know aka players.

[Thursday]
46halbe and I attended a “Republican Dinner” about the topic of internal security. I hoped to get some information that I didn’t already know which unluckily wasn’t the case - except for the story, that a civil airplane was nearly shot down in january because it’s radio hadn’t worked. Also some of the people believe in some political-media-mind-control-conglomerat which controls all our minds. The case seemed really lost when one women wouldn’t even have explained to her how emails can be encrypted, cause - like she said - the goven’ment knows it all. After the dinner another women from the Humanitarion Union tried to recruit me as a member. 46halbe was spared cause she left earlier and also had the benefit of already being engaged for another organization. Well, sometimes putting your keys on the table can become a political statement. =)

[Friday]
I nearly finished the presentation for LSR and met with the guy for whom it’s for. He was quite pleased with my work and promised even more valuable contacts for my interview. After that I went to Sherpa where we played WoW until 0400 the next morning. Since he had to fix MLs computer first and since we couldn’t really agree what to do we didn’t get as far as I had hoped we would. Both of them were astonished that I brought my own salad and some sweets and told me that they now felt as bad hosts. I had to explain to them that I rather bring my food when gaming, because I when hunger strikes I eat like a troll and I often feel guilty when eating to much.

[Saturday]
I didn’t sleep very good because the night before I clearly had played to long. Went to Hamburg where I had a very nice evening with Fadi and Lubelia. We had some food, some whine, some fun and even got some work done. (To many somes but then it rhymed. Great isn’t it?) When the pulk!!! will be history I’ll surely miss those evenings.

[Sunday]
GM-meeting without Orlit because he had two work. We where quite productive but I can’t tell to much because there might be - well you know - players. After we were finished I showed Fadi WoW and we played for two hours. I wonder if he’ll get hooked up. On the way back I wrote this so after two rather untimely post you get this review right on time. Right now I realize, that I might not be able to make it before midnight. Damn!

I managed to post the paceholder 2 minutes to midnight. ^^

casual display of power

Today was the last lecture of ‘history of computing’. And again the prof gave an example of his vast knowledge: In one sentence he made a connection between GNU/Linux, anarchy/communism and the Spanish civil war. And it even makes sense…

In the supermarket I had a flashing of precognitive perception. While emptying my shopping cart I suddenly knew that when I’m finished there’ll be a man who would want to get my cart without realising that he has to pass the entrance before getting one. Well, what should I say. As I was finished packing, there was a man who…

2005 week 6

Monday
Monday saw the end of the european final beta of WoW. While I was virtuously sitting at my workplace - not playing to the bitter end - I couldn’t refrain from watching the various forums. What I saw there reminded me of press coverage of war (somebody has a good translation for ‘Kriegsberichtserstattung’?). Every minute there were new pix of the burning legion of halfnaked chars dancing into armageddon. I bet CNN hadn’t as much material on the War in Iraq as the WoW-freaks posted that day about a virtual battle.

As I reported earlier I stopped doing the Karate thing. Since I needed some kind of replacement I met with Lili for a little swimming exercise. But before we could practice I had to get new trunks. So we went to Karstadt where I selected a simple thing which was approximately as green as my old one. Then I saw the price. 30 Euros. I was instantly wondering if there wasn’t something more reasonably priced. After all I only wanted to go swimming not catwalking. Soon enough I found trunks that looked nearly the same - they where red/blue but had the same cut - but was only 3 Euro. That left me wondering about the complex and probably wonderful world of bathing suit economics.

Tuesday
I agreed to do a presentation for a guy a now from work. He has a ambitious and scurrile programme: He has founded a association that wants to recover some airplanes which got lost in WWII and now are beneath 100 meters of ice. This evening they had a meetint which I also was invited to. As I was about to show them the first draft of the presentation (made with openoffice), I realised that these slides meant two totally different things. For me it was some clicking and some reading to find out how to scroll a text. For the other people [well except for the webdesigner maybe :) ] it was colorful and fullscreen. probably I wasn’t doing them a favor cause making a presentation is boring clickwork but because they wouldn’t know how to do it. I often forget that there are people who don’t know the things I do.

Wednesday
Had a meeting at the 2nd Force. Attendants were all workers, on vice-boss and one boss. I will not rant about the meeting here cause this might - through murphys law - make me another unemployed blogger. Most of the people who have seen me the days after this have witnessed my frustration. Thanks for your patience. The idea of blogging about this made me think about a second, closed blog - again.

waves to the mindreaderwriter.

Thursday
planning at the 2nd force was pretty much business as usual. Also we implemented one of our ideas which turned out better than we thought. After that I signed my contact at iBuG - oh joy! If only the bureaucracy hadn’t messed up the whole thing this could have happened two month earlier. Anyways, I’m grateful for the opportunity.

The evening brought another meeting this time of a more pleasurable nature. After a hour of official things all iBuGs swarmed the mexican restaurant we tested two weeks before.

Friday
I don’t recall what I exactly planned that day but I ended up setting up Sp’s network which I aptly named SpN. (This is an insider joke. probably only Sp and Ms. Klunkerbotte will understand.) playing with all that gadgets I became all fired up about getting WLAN for myself.
Two partys took place that day but I attended none, because I weren’t in the right mood for Lilis party (which didn’t matter cause she weren’t there either) and I really thought aA’s party was scheduled a week later. Instead I visited Squee where we had dinner and rent a movie. Don’t ever bother to watch “Zu Warriors” which is utter crap. Well, at least the Miramax version is. As an imdb-user pointed out:

[Miramax] chopped down “Legend of Zu” from 104 minutes to 76 minutes. Important character elements are lopped off, but I guess Miramax thought that helped the “pacing” of the film.

It has nice SFX tho…

Saturday
Breakfast with tp, Ms. Klunkerbotte and Sp which was nice and another playtime at midBros place with the usual suspects. There isn’t much to tell this time, except that I WON TWO TIMES.

w00t!

And I promised Squee to write it down so I can always be remembered about his when I start whining about unfair-games-that-make-me-loose-every-time. =)

Sunday
Spent the whole day looking for a tool that let’s me synchronize my T610 with my sunbird. Sunbird is a quite cool calendar app from the mozilla people. I hope they keep up the good work cause version 0.2 (which in fact is the standalone-version of version 0.(2+x) of the mozilla calendar extension) looks very promising.

2005 week 3

Monday
Feeling nearly fully restored I resumed taking my place at the university where business as usual ensued. I got two mails that day which really delighted me.

The first was from the vampire which actually had written upon my experimental invocation, received my answer and even wrote a reply which I got that day. Being used to monthlong communication pauses (hence the other nickname ‘Kommunikationspusche’) this was a refreshing change. The same day I wrote an answer but only time (or maybe the vampire) will tell if the things said there were a good idea.

The second mail came from Asus and basically said: “Well, if your’re Notebook is broken, just send it in.” I am glad to hear that and really hope that their service is better than apples.

Tuesday
Had the monthly meeting at the university and a very funny lecture where the prof kept bashing microsoft in spite of saying he wouldn’t do so. Hehe, I don’t mind…

Skipped training and instead went to the doc who took three phials of my blood. Maybe a closer examination of my vitae will suggest a reason of the things that happened last week.

Wednesday
At the Hörspiel-AG we made voice training. While trying to bring out some resonance and loudness (Rufübung) jK told kK: “Ruf mich an!” It took some moments before the meaning of those words had sunk in.

Then I had dinner with Squee at her place which (the dinner) was all tasty and yummy. Only the legacy of the snotling was a little disturbance to our comfort.

Later we had refreshing coktails: Cucumber/tomato for me and apple/cinnamon fpr Squee. And then we saw Ong Bak.

Thursday
Went at a meeting at the 2nd Force. Our viceboss asked us to try write paper a while ago in which we should lay out how we think our website can be improved. They said we would talk about it in that paper.

As the meeting took place our boss told us: “Well, I think it would be a good idea to write down how we could improve our site. So I propose you write it down and we meet again in a few weeks to discuss the stuff.” I just don’t know what to say about this.

Also one of the senior colleagues which is a member of the office for quite some time but has never worked online is from now on our direct supervisor. So the connection to the longterm planning team should get better. I wonder how this one will work out…

Friday
Didn’t went to university. At the warmup football match at the beginning of our training a guy gave me a forceful kick to the chest while I’ll tried to hinder his throw-in. I was really shocked by this event.

To understand why this shocked me you have to know: We don’t do some kind of shaolin soccer, we just play football to warm up. I was standing approx. half a meter away from that guy waving my hands in the air to make it hard for him to throw. I didn’t attack or touch him in any way. He is very muscular and has done a lot of fighting/martial arts stuff for quite some years. I’m rather fragile, you might call my figure ‘geeky’ and my reflexes are fast compared to a turtle. Which you can see easily when looking at my belt. It’s yellow, not black.

I know that out in the streets you might get kicked and no one will care. But I do learn karate to learn to cope with things like this some day. I expect a martial arts school to be a place of respect where I can learn accordant to my present skill. I expect to learn at a safe place and our dojo stopped to be that place this day.

Later I heard the same guy gave on od our girls (half his weight, height and age) a concussion the week before.

After the training I saw the “House of Flying Daggers” together with Loose, Lili and some guys from karate. Unluckily some of them didn’t lile the movie and couldn’t refrain from giving comments while the movie was running. I didn’t say anything cause I didn’t feel like I could be polite and didn’t want to snap at them. After the movie I told them in polite manner, that I think one should leave, when the movie is not to ones liking. “Well, but we paid?” That is what I call egocentric ignorance.

Nevertheless: I like the movie much better, than the Outsider did.

Saturday
The training got worser still. After a very good lesson was nearly over, one of the guests nearly broke my thumb. When sparring on the ground you are expected to use reasonable force and stop immediately when your opponent knocks on the mat. Well, so much for theory. He grabbed my hand, got hold of my thumb and nearly seized it farther than it’s supposed to go.

After waiting for two hours the doctor finally had time and asked me: “If it doesn’t hurt that much, why are you here?” Fuckhead. Luckily there seems to be nothing broken or ripped apart. After that I wrote my sensei a mail in which I asked for a 6 month leave from out school. Maybe I’ll stop going there altogether.

The evening was playing time again. “Ticket to Ride” this time, which was fun. I even won once.

Sunday
Nothing much happened also I am supposed to write at my thesis right now, because at the end of January I’m supposed to have a chapter finished. But I haven’t done a single page yet. Everytime I sit at my computer trying to do something I feel like paralyzed and I don’t know what to do against it.

The Outsider spent some (online) time with me and gave me a good trashing at incubation. Well, to be honest now our overall score is 3:3. We also phoned for an hour or so. It’s nice to know that some people are there for you when you need them. They even can read between the lines…

Man. When I look back at the first three weeks, I’m really wondering how this year will turn out. No headstart this time. Well, maybe all the crap comes at the beginning.

Next Week
Sunshine! productivity! Great Choices! A whole chapter written in just seven days! And maybe I’ll overcome this freaking depression by then…

Snapping Settlers

I snapped the first time when yoBro refused to deal with me when my offer was as good as the other ones, my offer came first and I really needed the deal because I was waaay behind. It was of course my fault cause some rounds earlier I robbed him. After the refused deal I was like: “Well, this doesn’t make sense any longer, there’s no chance I’ll ever get near winning, so I give up.” So much for calmness and relaxation on my part. ARGL!

The second came when - in the next game - victory was only one point away for me. When yoBro saw my cards he said loud: “Jeck needs this and that to win.” This was unfair because the robber was about to be placed, it’s against the rules and within victory within reach I was very excited. So I snapped at him: “WHAT THE FUCK WAS THAT FOR?” All he said was: “Well, it was against the rules but I’d do it again in a minute.”

After the game I tried to explain yoBro what made me snap but he said, that my emotional stability was my problem. As anger rose again I told him that he might be right, but that if he can’t tolerate that I’ll snap if he breaks the rules in such a situation, we can’t play together any longer.

So he - somehow - admitted that this would be the way to go. I’ll try to be calmer and he’ll try not to push buttons…

Geez. Were board games invented with ‘fun’ and ’socializing’ in mind? How many divorces have been submitted because of them? And where can I find enough Zen to be relaxed about a game?

2005 week 2

Monday
So far so good. Got up a little to late and went to my workplace. There I got a machine which I utterly failed to install. Except the wonky installation and a little itch in my right eye everything seemed fine.

Tuesday
Since last silvester when I managed to run an little branch into my right eye it sometimes is dry and hurts a little when I wake up. This morning my eye was big like tabletennis ball and red like a fresh wound. Skipped all planned things-to-do and went to the doc who subscribed a eye-paste and told me to stay away from screens and written stuff until it gets better. (No, she meant my eye, also you might have a point there.) As I was there I told her of some other things that are bothering me. Her only answer to all my questions was: “Well you should find yourself a specialist and bother him. Look on up in the phonebook.” Skipped training.

Wednesday
Eye was still a pain in the head. This day went by and was very blurred while doing so.

Thursday
Condition had improved so much that Squee and me took sp up on his breakfast offer. While Squee had to leave somewhen in the afternoon I stayed till eight. We didn’t talk as much as we use to do but then we where both sick bastardos.

Friday
Health was nearly restored at that point. Spent the day cleaning up my room and playing a game that sp recommended to me the other day. Skipped training, cause what hurts most are sudden eye movements.

Saturday
Skipped training. In the afternoon Squee joined us and we cooked some delicious vegetables with peanutsauce and rice. The we went to the midBro for a game of Settlers of Catan. When playing board games I sometimes get to emotional when totally loosing or nearly winning. Read a rant about it in this post. We also had some fun with Robs AccessoiresTM.

The real fun part came with the night. As I tried to sleep I felt somehow dizzy. I really can’t describe it exactly. I could breath but it was as if somehow I would suffocate. It also felt like I would pass out when I not concentrating. This feeling was accompanied by hefty nausea. I really panicked and called for the doc, at that point it was 4:28. The doc, who came two hours later, was slightly spooky. Imgaine Kiefer Sutherland playing a doc who doesn’t sleep enough, has to much cocaine, only lives at night at from time to time laughs maniacally at his unsuspecting patients. He complimented my healthy pulse and told me that I probably need to drink more and had to much fatty food and unhealthy stuff the day before. Which might be true cause I had not only the meal, but also some fried haloumi, half a bottle of wine, some coffe and three cigarettes, but I’d really would have liked him to give some kind of magical pill. Squee staid awake the night and by simply being there was the best help I could imagine. And I could barely stop her doing the dishes while waiting for the doc. Thank you, Squee!

Sunday
Finally fell aslepp around 7am. Woke up at eleven and spent the day scared by the night before playing computer games* to distract me. Unluckily I didn’t feel fit enought to join Squee and the other for a session where pics from a photographer who was at the last verstrahlt where showed. What I really didn’t understood was my colleague from work which called to ask if I could work. We’re only three people who do the job and that colleague hat to work ar another job (in the same editorial office) and the other was about to leave town. We agreed on a makeshift site for that day, but he wanted me do it despite being sick. He didn’t mind the overtime but thought that the bosses would think our job is redundant when he would do both jobs. I tried to convince him that an emergency solution is what it is bo matter who did it, but he wouldn’t see it that way. Luckily our 3rd colleague agreed to do it before leaving. I dearly hope the next week gets better.

*I started playing Incubation per Mail with the Outsider. Maybe the vampire can/wants to join us?

2005 week 1

Monday
Because of a sick co-worker I had to do a shift at the Zentraler Diktatorischer Rundfunk. Their I had to write an article about the Einstein-Year 2005 and that made my heart bleed. Last year 46halbe and I wrote a paper on John von Neumann and thus I know a little about the time when Einstein lived. But with a 3 hours deadline I had to rush the article and scrape it to together from only a few sources when I’d rather had spent a month on an article like that.

Well at least it was not as bad as the time where I had to write about the “nipple-eye-catcher-test”… =)

Tuesday
Worked on diploma thesis. Wrote down random thoughts on rss-feeds. Regarding mass media rss-feeds is the first time in media history where information is given to the consumers without any kind of branding or corporate identity. But then this is already changing since advertisment is already sneaking it’s way into the feeds. But it still will be a nice way for consumer to control their navigation though the sea of news while having total control about the layout.

The evening brought very exhaustive training and TV with mibro, his girl and his roommate. While I find Nip Tuck relatively interesting I still don’t get Six Feet Under, but will give it another try anyways.

Wednesday
Began reading “Inventing the Internet” by Janet Abbate. [Her site might be interesting for everyone who cares about womenincomputing.]

The night made me love my job at the tv-station again: I saw the press showing of Blade Trinity. If you like action, vampires and - ehhhm - action go watch it. For those who want to know more: It’s more like the first Blade than the second…

Thursday
First thing in the morning was a phone call. I finally reached Squee and found out why she wasn’t reachable for the last two days.

The I tried to buy a desktop lamp. And it was like somebody wrote a law which banned those things. I was in three major temples of mammon.

Without light I continued my studies of the history of the internet. And guess what? It’s a common misconception that the Arpanet was build to resist an atomic strike. That was just a nice side effect and the topic of an earlier work by paul Baran. Also the Arpa was always in a need to justify the things they spent money on to the congress. So Arpa kept saying: “Why, of course the Arpanet is highly useful for our army! Granted, you can’t shoot people with it, but it saves you a lot of money and it’s dezentralized to survive an atomic strike!”

Why did they want the Net then? What their scientific contractors needed most were all different kinds of computers which were very expensive at that time. They simply hoped that with hooking the machines and thus enabling their contractors to use remote computers they would save a lot of money. But sharing didn’t catch on like they hoped. It was another service which really got the people excited about the net: E-Mail.

Met Lili afterwards and finally got one of those now secret lamps. Then I broke the v-oath, followed a primal urge which suddenly hit me and ate a döner. Unluckily it didn’t even taste as good as I hungered for…
Since I didn’t want it to show up later that evening I drowned it in cocktails which we spent 45 Euros on and weren’t even drunk. I also smoked to much.

Still later that evening I was joined by Squee. Much rejoicing took place.

Friday
Got up to late, had a nice talk about poly and secret DNA-tests, trained til exhaustion and went to a shisha-bar afterwards.

Saturday
E-Commerce seminar, nearly crashed.

Sunday
Verfemten-meeting, got back, wrote this…

[Maybe there'll be longer versions of fri - sun tomorrow.]

Just to notify the world at large of a strange mood I’m in…

…nothing to see here, move along…

Reclaim your machine.

What can I say. Ubuntu still works. What a good feeling…

I finally began to write. After weeks of reading and surrogate activity I started to really work on my diploma thesis. Of course I had to do so: I tricked myself into it when I promised my tutor that I would send him something to read by the end of the week. That would be tomorrow and I already have three pages. It may not sound much, but for me it’s a good sign because on of the most difficult steps is behind me: The Beginning.

Because of that I’m in a really good mood, which helped to survive the day at the central dictatory radio where we had the bi-weekly planning meeting for some hours. After that I met Lili who read my stuff and gave me some usefuls hints. On the way home I found a quote which really describes what I experience when reading some of the books about media theory (Horkheimer and Adorno come to my mind:

“Was sollte das?” fragte ich, während ich mich ächzend erhob. “Ich bin dabei fast verrückt geworden, ich habe nichts von alledem verstanden und schon jetzt so gut wie alles wieder vergessen.”
“So ist das doch immer mit anspruchsvollen Büchern”, sagte Homunkoloss, während er mir auf die Füße half.
- from Walter Moers’ “Die Stadt der träumenden Bücher”

Which is a really cool book. props to Outsider who recommended it to me. All of you who can read and understand German: Go get that book. Everyone else: pity yourself and pray for a translation. Or start learning the language that brought you such wonderful words like kindergarten, angst and blitzkrieg…

Ich bin weg,

OMG!

I lost my ID and my students pass yesterday. While at work I called cafeteria in university where I ate yesterday. But alas! They didn’t had it!

As I was beginning to tear my hair there was one last hope: I called my brother at home who went through my things and found it in my binder…

*phew*

While you’re here, go and check out the wallpapers Huricos found.

Another nice picture I saw today was the little digger on our street. Unfortunatly the wide angle of my camera wasn’t …uhm… wide enough and I wasn’t able to move our house out of the way so these is the best pic I managed to take:

I don’t know why I like this little thing so much. I think it looks like playmobil. :-) The images are hosted by the lomographic society. It seems when uploading the photos the quality is decreased. BTW: Sometime ago Gossip mentioned somthing about G-Blog v2 (can’t find the post) with image hosting capabilities. I wonder how far this project has progressed…
