More and more people vanish to LJ. Before you think there is no alternative: Fear not, because there will be.
I’m giving my best to make Wordpress MU work on my server. If you’re interested watch this space, it’s the place where it will be installed in the near future. (probably first week of january.) If you want to try it have a go here. It’s a testserver which will be erased now and then, but gives you the opportunity to mess around with the site and a test-blog. Do not become attached to the testplace it will be erased with the end of the year.

- Slightly more complicated backend. (Well, not really. You’ll get used to it. But of course it’s not as slick as g-blog.)

I checked Wordpress and really liked the approach and layout. However, one thing held me back: I’ve grown quite fond of the ‘private posting’ option on LJ and afaik on WordPress the closest to that was a password protected entry which I interpret as an entry whose title/category can still be seen? Or did I get that wrong?

No you did get it right. There are also plugins who can make whole blogs private, but there is no way to mark a post as “friends only”. I hope someone from the WP-MultiUser-community will develop something like this soon.
(”Private Entries” as in g-blog are possible.)
